Oprah WinfreyBillionaire Philanthropist I find the life story of Oprah Winfrey to be amazing. With the amount of her
success and all the millions of dollars she has given away, you have to
wonder; is she so very successful because of the power of giving or is
she giving
because she is so successful? Which came first
the chicken or the egg?
Oprah Gail Winfrey is rated the most philanthropic African American of all time. That is no small feat. 
Born into poverty she is now the richest self-made woman in America. According to Forbes, she is worth over $2.5 billion, as of September, 2007. In 2005 she became the first black person listed by Business Week as one of America's top 50 most generous philanthropists (see other famous philanthropists here), having given an estimated $303 million. Some of the charities of Oprah Winfrey include the projects I have listed here but this, by no means, is all of them In 1998, Winfrey began Oprah's Angel Network. This is a tremendous organization. It's main goal is to encourage people to make a difference in the lives of others. I love that whole concept. To date, Oprah's Angel Network has raised more than $51,000,000. As if that were not enough, as of September 2006, donations to the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry total more than $11 million. $11 million dollars! Homes have been built in four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama—before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Oprah also matched her viewers' donations. She personally giving $10 million to the cause. Can you see why she is one of my favorite billionaire philanthropists?
