Just a little bit

Let me start this by saying I don't have much. And while what I did wasn't much, it was all I could afford to do. I think a made a difference for this young man. I have toddler twins, and with prices the way they are my husband had to quit his job to stay home and watch them since we can not afford formal daycare. So as an Office Assistant I am trying to provide for a family of four, and to top it off someone broke into my car recently and robbed me.
That being said, I was on my way home from work when I stopped in at my local craft store to get some button thread to fix my pants (it had been one of those days). When I saw a man in his mid twenties who looked like he had been through some tough times holding a sign. It said please help me, I'm homeless, god bless.
I tried to get cash-back from my purchase but they did not allow it at the store. So I drove to the closest ATM and pulled out $20.00, not a lot to some people, but for me it is a case of diapers, which in our house is gold. I drove back to the place where I saw him, walked down to him, and briefly told him my story, wished him good luck and handed him the twenty. As I started to walk away, he stopped me and told me I was the only one who had stopped today, and how much he appreciated it because he was so hungry. I told him that I knew it was not much, but it was all I could do. He asked why, when I had kids to feed did I give him the money? I looked at him and told him at least my children and I have a place to sleep at night. I wish I could do more, but it makes me feel better to know that you had some food.
He smiled appreciating and gave me a hug. As I drove away I could see him in my rear view mirror and felt that warm "done something good feeling".
I know it does not solve his problems, but at least temporarily he was in a better situation where it was not quite as bad. Nothing is perfect but if everyone helps someone, this would be a much easier world to live in.
