Doing Something Very Nice

by Fran
(United States)

My story is about some one who did something very nice for me.

A few years ago I was in the hospital for quite a few surgeries to remove a large portion of flesh from my upper leg and hip.

I had fallen victim to the flesh-eating bacteria that we carry on our skin and required a great deal of surgery to remove all the diseased skin and get back to normal, healthy skin.

I was in the hospital for quite some time and this story takes place when I was on the fifth of six surgeries to remove this skin.

I had been scheduled for surgery later in the morning and my husband had come by early to sit with me. The lady who sometimes cleaned my room had "befriended" me and always stopped to say hello even if she had not been assigned to my room that day.

She knew I was set for a late morning surgery and had planned on coming by to wish me luck. She saw my husband arrive and didn't want to disturb us so she thought she would stop by later as she had more than enough time.

What she didn't realize was that my doctor had been working faster than usual that morning and could take me early.

So when she stopped by the room I was already gone and my husband and left to go to the coffee shop, taking his coat with him which he didn't usually do.

She thought I had taken a turn for the worse and left her station and hurried to the chapel to pray for me.

The incident almost cost her her job until the head nurse found out why she was missing for half an hour.

Everyone was so touched by her concern for me and my welfare that she was given just a tiny reprimand for not telling anyone where she was going.

I thought that her feelings for me were so thoughtful and caring because she knew she might be risking her job by leaving her cleaning supplies in the middle of the break room and leaving the floor to go to the chapel to pray for me and my family and I spoke on her behalf to the hospital only to find out that the nurses all stood by her because they knew how much she had become attached to me.

I will always think of her as a very wonderful a special person who did something very nice for me.
